How to Use the Volume Converter

This calculator changes an existing amount of volume or capacity into a different unit. It works for liquid measurements and cubic space measurements, provided the right unit is chosen.

01

Enter your amount

Type into the From field, or edit the To field to calculate in reverse. Decimal values are supported.

02

Select both units

Use the grouped dropdown lists for metric, US liquid, UK Imperial, kitchen or cubic units.

03

Read your result

Copy the converted value or check the updated conversion factor, formula and table.

Volume Conversion Formula

Every unit in the calculator has a known equivalent in liters. To convert from one unit to another, multiply the input by the number of liters per source unit and divide by the number of liters per destination unit.

General formula

Converted volume = Input × (liters per source unit ÷ liters per destination unit)

Example 1: Convert 5 US gallons to liters

A US liquid gallon equals exactly 3.785411784 liters. Multiply 5 by 3.785411784 to get 18.92705892 L.

Example 2: Convert 2 cubic meters to liters

One cubic meter equals 1,000 liters. Multiply 2 by 1,000 to get 2,000 L.

The formula example below follows the two selected dropdown units: 5 L × 0.264172052358 ≈ 1.32086026179 US gal.

US vs UK vs Metric Volume Measurements

Gallons, pints and fluid ounces

A US liquid gallon is about 3.785 liters, while an Imperial gallon is about 4.546 liters. The difference carries through to pints and fluid ounces, so selecting the wrong system changes the result.

For example, 1 US pint is approximately 473 mL, whereas 1 UK pint is approximately 568 mL. Both appear in this calculator under separate names.

Cups, teaspoons and tablespoons

A US customary cup contains about 236.59 mL, while a metric cup is 250 mL. Likewise, a US tablespoon is about 14.79 mL and a metric tablespoon is 15 mL.

An Australian tablespoon is commonly 20 mL. When following recipes, use the measurement convention stated in the recipe rather than assuming all cups and spoons are equal.

Volume is not weight. Cups and milliliters measure volume; grams and ounces (without “fluid”) measure mass. To convert ingredients from cups to grams, you need the ingredient’s density or a trusted ingredient-specific reference.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many liters are in one US gallon?

One US liquid gallon equals exactly 3.785411784 liters. The UK Imperial gallon is larger at 4.54609 liters, so select the correct option before converting.

How many milliliters are in one liter?

One liter equals exactly 1,000 milliliters. For example, 2.5 liters equals 2,500 mL.

What is the difference between US and UK gallons?

A US liquid gallon is 3.785411784 liters. A UK Imperial gallon is 4.54609 liters. They are not interchangeable, and both are included as separate units.

Is one cup always 240 mL?

No. One US customary cup is approximately 236.588 mL, while a metric cup is 250 mL. Some labels use rounded values. This tool keeps US and metric cups separate.

How many teaspoons are in a tablespoon?

In the US customary system, one tablespoon equals three teaspoons. Metric teaspoons and tablespoons also follow a three-to-one relationship (5 mL and 15 mL). The Australian tablespoon is 20 mL, or four metric teaspoons.

Is 1 cubic centimeter the same as 1 milliliter?

Yes. Exactly 1 cm³ equals 1 mL. Similarly, 1 cubic meter equals exactly 1,000 liters.

Can I use this to convert cups of flour to grams?

No—not directly. Flour and other ingredients have different densities, and packing methods affect the weight. Use a recipe-specific mass conversion rather than treating cups and grams as interchangeable.

Are the results exact?

The conversion factors use established unit definitions, but displayed decimals may be rounded. Exact source values and a full-precision formula are used in the calculation. Check the required significant figures for technical measurements.

Does the calculator include US dry pints and quarts?

No. The US pint and quart dropdown options use US liquid units. US dry units have different sizes and need a separately labeled conversion.

These tools help when your measurement question involves a different physical quantity or unit system.

Measurement Standards and Sources

The fixed conversion factors are based on established SI, US customary and Imperial definitions. For reference, see the NIST Guide to the SI: Volume conversion factors. This calculator is intended for everyday conversions; confirm the applicable standard for regulated or high-precision work.

Rounding note: The visible result may be rounded to improve readability. Always confirm whether a quoted capacity uses US liquid, UK Imperial, metric, or another convention.
