Calculation method

CAGR = (ending value / beginning value) ^ (1 / years) − 1.

How to use this cagr calculator

CAGR smooths overall change into one equivalent annual rate. It is a summary measure, not the actual return earned in every individual year.

Formula and calculation method

CAGR = (ending value / beginning value) ^ (1 / years) − 1.

Worked example

An account that doubles over ten years has a positive CAGR, even if its year-by-year path includes gains and losses.

Understanding the result

CAGR compresses an uneven path into one annualized percentage. A business or asset could rise sharply one year and decline the next while still ending with a positive CAGR. This number alone says little about the risks taken along the way.

When to use this calculator

Use matching measurement dates, positive starting values and consistent units. If cash was added or withdrawn during the period, consider a cash-flow-sensitive method rather than treating the beginning and end balances as a single untouched investment.

What the results do not include

CAGR ignores the timing of additional cash flows and does not capture volatility.

Frequently asked questions

Can CAGR be negative?

Yes, when the ending value is lower than the starting value.

Is CAGR suitable for irregular deposits?

No. Use a cash-flow method such as IRR when investment amounts change over time.
